City History

"Founded in 1769 by French-Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette as Les Petites Cotes ("The Little Hills"), St. Charles is the third-oldest city in Missouri and a historic Missouri River port. It served as Missouri's first state capital (1821–1826) and was the final 'civilized' stop for the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804. Today, St. Charles features the largest Nationally Registered Historic District in Missouri along its Main Street."-stcharlescitymo.gov

City Operations

St. Charles is led by a Mayor and a 10-person City Council (one member per City Ward). Both work side by side under the City's Charter (click here to view the Charter). The Mayor is supported by the Director of Administration in the daily operation of the City. Many citizen-led boards, commissions, committees, & task forces also support the decision-making and operations of the city.

City Council

Of particular importance to the mission of this organization is respectful, open, and regular communication with the City Council. Council members are all reachable by email at any time (click here to access their contact information). The Council has the power to advance bills for a vote, pass legislation, design and approve change to city ordinance (click here to view current code), and much more.
